What the course covers

By the end of the day you’ll have used a range of tools – and left with the confidence to actually use them at home.

Power tools – confident use

Drill driver, impact driver, hand sander, orbital sander, handsaw, circular saw, mitre saw and jigsaw. Each tool demonstrated, then hands-on practice. We start from the very basics so anyone new to power tools can build up properly.

Drilling, fixings and filling holes

You’ll drill into three different wall types  – plasterboard, masonry and timber  – using the right bit and plug for each. Then take the screws out, fill the holes neatly with polyfilla and sand back. We’ll also cover how to caulk a skirting gap and fill a small wall hole, demonstrated on a proper skirting bench.

Measure, mark and cut

Working from a real plan, you’ll mark and cut timber pieces using a handsaw, jigsaw, circular saw and mitre saw. You’ll also learn how to set out and cut accurate angles – a skill that unlocks a huge range of home projects.

THE COMMUNITY PROJECT

Build something. Leave it behind. Take the confidence with you.

Every cohort builds something together. Not just to practise — but to leave something behind.

A Mug Exchange is a small wooden cabinet that lives outside someone’s home, filled with mugs for neighbours to borrow and swap. Part of a worldwide movement called Sidewalk Joy, bringing neighbourhoods closer together one small gesture at a time.

The one your cohort builds gets added to our community map. We use recycled timber wherever possible.

You’ll cut, assemble and finish it together, wood glue, nails and screws, and along the way you’ll learn when each one is the right choice for the job.

WHO YOU'LL LEARN FROM

Learn from the people that do this for real

Becky Russell, Founder and Tutor at DIY Her Way, Surrey

Becky Russell

Becky picked up her first power tool a few years ago in her late 30’s. Since then she’s built a 190,000-strong following by sharing her DIY journey honestly — the mistakes, the wins and everything in between. She teaches the way she learned: by doing. And DIY Her Way is where that passion moves off the screen and into the room with you.

Emma Daley - DIY Tutor at DIY Her Way, Surrey

Emma Daley

Emma was the kind of person who rebuilt a hi-fi unit as a teenager and asked for a drill for her 21st birthday. Carpentry is her speciality and wood is her material of choice. Over the years she’s tackled countless DIY and carpentry projects with the confidence to just get stuck in. We think you’ll understand why we chose her when you meet her.

FAQS

Common questions

Do I need to have done the Intro to DIY course first?

No – this course is open to everyone. That said, women who’ve completed the Intro tend to get more from these two days. If you’re coming in without that foundation, just make sure you’re comfortable with the basics before you arrive. Not sure? Get in touch and we’ll help you decide.

What if I'm somewhere in between, not a total beginner but not confident either?

That’s exactly who this course is for. You don’t need to be starting from zero, you just need to want more than where you are right now. If you can hold a drill but don’t fully trust yourself with it, you’re in the right place.

Will I save money by doing this course?

Almost certainly. The jobs you’ll learn to do yourself over two days would cost significantly more to have done professionally. Most women find the course pays for itself the first time they pick up a tool instead of picking up the phone.

What happens after the two days, is there anything else?

For most women this is where the real doing begins, taking what you’ve learned home and actually using it. If you want to go further still, our Handywomen Programme is the next step, a fully funded four-day programme for women who want to turn their skills into a career.

By the end of the day you'll have a list of jobs and the confidence to actually do them.
