When it comes to covering the windows in a bathroom, blinds are the most popular choice, due to their looks and functionality, as well as their ability to hold up well to the unique conditions of a bathroom – such as heat, moisture and humidity. You don’t want to install window treatments like drapes or curtains in a bathroom (unless it’s a half bathroom without a shower or tub) because the moisture and dampness will get trapped within the material and will eventually lead to the growth of mold and mildew.
Bathroom blinds come in a variety of styles, as well as materials. The style you choose is not as important as the materials, for obvious reasons. Wood blinds for bathrooms are not a good idea, since the wood can warp from the heat, humidity and moisture introduced by bathing and showering. Better options for bathroom window blinds include aluminum, vinyl or faux wood, which is made to look like wood but is actually a form of vinyl. Another material you can choose is bamboo, which is somewhat moisture resistant as well (although they are not recommended in locations that really get wet).
When it comes to choosing a style of blinds for the bathroom, you can select almost any type you like. There are bathroom roller blinds, which easily roll up and down and offer a sleek and contemporary look. Bathroom roller blinds come in bamboo or vinyl and are available in a wide selection of colors and patterns. Another good bathroom blind option are the wide 2” faux wood blinds, which lend a sophisticated feel to your bathroom space. If you have smaller windows, you may opt for bathroom mini-blinds instead.
As for determining the proper size of blinds for bathroom windows, you just want to make sure that the blinds completely cover the window, without offering any gaps that can diminish your privacy. If you have a small window and want to make it look larger, there is nothing stopping you from installing a larger or longer blind to increase the visual look of the window area.
Since you don’t have quite as many decorative options for blinds for the bathroom as you do in other rooms in the house due to the limited materials you can use, there are other ways that you can still enhance the look of your window treatments. You can add an interesting cord or tassle to the side of the blinds or can get creative by adding some jewels or finges to the edges of the blinds for a bit of bling. You can even add a decorative cornice above the blinds (avoid fabric covered ones or those with batting beneath the outer covering).
So, to recap some of the basic do’s and don’ts of buying and installing bathroom blinds:
DO:
- Opt for aluminum, vinyl or faux wood blinds. Bamboo blinds are okay in some bathrooms, too.
- Find the right style to compliment your bathroom décor – roller blinds, wide slat blinds and mini blinds are just some of the options available.
- Add small decorative touches, if desired, to enhance the look of your blinds, such as tassles, fringes, jewels and decorative cords.
- Make sure blinds for the bathroom completely cover the window, offering total privacy. You can opt for sizes that are larger than the window, however, if you want to visually increase the perceived size of the windows.
DON’T:
- Buy and install wood blinds in the bathroom.
- Buy and install fabric blinds, curtains or drapes.
- Buy window treatments that you don’t like just because you think your choices are limited. There are still plenty of styles and designs available to choose from.
The best blinds for bathroom use are those that enhance your bathroom décor, offer privacy, and that will not be prone to the development of mold or mildew. And with so many options to choose from, you’re sure to find a suitable set of blinds to cover your bathroom windows.
