Counter Height Chairs: Buying Basics

There are numerous uses for counter height chairs in your home.  Whether you are looking for chairs to add alongside your kitchen counter, counter height dining table, or home bar, or even if you are looking for a classy and trendy look outdoors, you will find that the type of counter height chair you choose can make a big impact on the décor of your room.

The main difference between a counter height chair and any other chair is, of course, its height.  Most countertops or counter height tables are about 34” – 36” tall.  In contrast, a regular height table is about 28” – 30” tall on average.  This means that you need taller chairs to comfortably sit at a counter height, but it also means that the chairs you select will generally be more noticeable in the room because they are taller.

When buying counter height chairs, you should keep in mind the exact height of the location they will be used and then subtract 10” – 12” from that number to find a height that will provide comfortable seating.  Keep in mind that if you are planning on using these types of chairs for a bar area, you may need to buy bar height chairs rather than counter height ones because they won’t fit properly.  Most bars are about 40” – 42” tall, so you will need a taller chair or stool to sit comfortably at that height.  Some bars will be lower, so in those cases you can buy counter height bar chairs or stools, but again, it is important to measure carefully before buying the chairs.

Becoming more and more popular these days is the use of counter height office chairs, as people are considering outfitting their home offices with something other than the traditional desk, using counters, taller tables, and even kitchen alcoves.  If you spend a lot of time at your office, however, you should first make sure that this type of chair will be comfortable to sit in for long periods of time, no matter how much you might look the look of the taller tables and chairs.  You can get these chairs though with arms, lumbar supports, swivel and reclining mechanisms, and more.

Counter height chairs come in many different designs.  You can find high back chairs, open back chairs, no back chairs or bench style chairs.  You can find swivel counter height chairs and stools or stationary ones.  Chairs that include an added foot rest offer a comfortable place to rest your feet so they are not dangling in the air when you sit, if you are not tall enough to touch the ground when sitting at that height.  You can even find folding counter height chairs, which are great if you don’t always want to leave the chairs out so you can store them when not in use.

You can also find many counter height chair materials to choose from.  Just as with any other chairs, you can find wood, metal, plastic, fabric covered, or leather counter height chairs.  They come in all colors and all decorating styles, from traditional to contemporary.  One of the great benefits of a counter height table and chairs is that they provide a casual and relaxed space for seating and entertaining, and so most chair sets of this height are modern, sophisticated and fun.

When shopping, you will probably find that many stores sell counter height tables and chairs that come together as sets, but you should also be able to find plenty of chairs at this height that you can purchase on their own to either use at a counter or to add to an already existing table or bar that you have.   Many types of stores sell counter-height chairs, so you should be able to find a wide selection to choose from.

Counter height chairs and stools can make a big impact on your décor because they are very noticeable due to their height.  And by adding a few interesting looking chairs or stools to your kitchen, bar, or home office, you are sure to add not only some additional seating space, but some added decorative interest as well.
